Urgent car repair

A repair bill
you never saw coming.

Before you pay: your right to a written estimate, then five ways to cover a $300 to $1,000 bill — compared honestly, including the ones that don't involve us.

  • Written estimate required over $100
  • 5 moyens de payer
  • What each one costs
01

First: is the repair actually urgent?

Not all repairs are equal. Separating what's urgent from the rest often changes the amount you need to finance — and sometimes removes the need to borrow at all.

Unsafe or immobilizing

Brakes, steering, tires, lights, major leaks, overheating. Do it now: driving is risky, and letting it worsen costs more.

Soon to be immobilizing

Slipping clutch, weak battery, worn belt. Can be planned over a few weeks — enough time to save up or compare prices.

Comfort or cosmetic

Air conditioning, bodywork, noises with no mechanical consequence. Can wait. Don't borrow for this.

The right move: ask the shop to split the bill in two — “what must be done today for the vehicle to be safe” and “what can wait.” It's a normal request, and it often cuts the urgent amount by several hundred dollars.

Your rights: the written estimate

In Quebec, the Consumer Protection Act governs car repairs. These protections are specific to Quebec and they work in your favour — but only if you know them before authorizing the work.

  • For a repair over $100, you are entitled to a written estimate before the work begins.
  • The shop cannot charge more than the estimated amount.
  • Any additional work requires your prior authorization. Give it in writing, or have it confirmed by email.
  • You are entitled to a detailed invoice, and to the replaced parts if you ask for them.
  • A repair is covered by a warranty — keep the invoice.
Before borrowing, run these three free checks:
  • Your warranty (vehicle, previously replaced part, extended warranty) — does it cover the failure?
  • Your auto or home insurance — does it cover the event (vandalism, damage, breakage)?
  • Your roadside assistance (CAA, credit card, insurer) — does it cover the tow?

A second estimate at another shop is also free or inexpensive, and often changes the total significantly.

Five ways to pay, compared

Ranked from least to most expensive. Work down this list in order and stop at the first option genuinely available to you.

OptionCostWhen it's the right choiceThe catch
1. Your savings None Always first, even if it draws down your cushion. Rebuilding savings costs less than repaying fees. Keep enough to cover your essentials until the next payday.
2. Arrangement with the shop Often none or low Many shops will accept payment in two or three instalments. Ask — it's free and often granted. Must be in writing. Check that no administration fees are added.
3. Line of credit Low If you have one, it's almost always the cheapest way to borrow. Requires a good credit score. Minimum payments can stretch the debt out for a long time.
4. Credit card Moderate Acceptable if you pay the balance in full by the due date — the credit is then free. Paying the minimum is expensive for a long time. A cash advance accrues interest from day one.
5. Short-term loan High A last resort — when the vehicle is necessary to earn your income, the options above are closed, and the payments fit your budget. More expensive than bank credit. Best reserved for $300 to $1,000 repayable over a few months.

What financing would cost

If you reach the fifth option, here is what a loan looks like based on your bill. Figures from our published schedule, biweekly.

Avoiding the next emergency

A “car” fund

Even $20 per pay builds a cushion that absorbs the next bill without borrowing. It's the only approach that lowers the cost over the long run.

Preventive maintenance

Expensive breakdowns often come from deferred maintenance. The manufacturer's schedule costs less than the repair it prevents.

A regular mechanic

A shop that knows your vehicle warns you about coming wear — which turns an emergency into a planned expense.

Frequently asked questions

Can the shop charge me more than the estimate?

In Quebec, for a car repair over $100, you are entitled to a written estimate before the work begins, and the merchant cannot charge you more than the estimated amount. Additional work not covered by the estimate requires your prior authorization. Have any authorization given over the phone confirmed in writing (email or text).

Can I refuse to pay for the estimate?

The shop may charge a fee to prepare the estimate, but it must tell you before preparing it. If you have the same shop carry out the repair, the estimate fee generally cannot be added to the bill. Ask which rule applies before authorizing the diagnosis.

Am I entitled to a warranty on the repair?

Yes. A car repair generally carries a legal warranty on parts and labour. Keep your detailed invoice: it is what lets you enforce that warranty if the same defect returns.

Is it better to borrow or postpone the repair?

It comes down to one question: do you need the vehicle to earn your income? If so, being without it often costs more than the repair. If not, postponing and saving for a few weeks is almost always cheaper than borrowing. A short-term loan is a stopgap, not a car-financing solution.

My repair is more than $1,000. What can I do?

Prêt Express finances $300 to $1,000. Beyond that, see predigo.ca for a larger personal loan, discuss a payment arrangement with the shop, or check whether your insurance or warranty covers part of the work.
